It is a minor detail, yet it determines a change of register. The figure does not merely reflect the world, but observes it with a form of protective attention, as if watching over its surroundings. The entire composition revolves around the symbol of the butterfly, multiplied in a chromatic dance that envelops the face and body like a living garment. In Asian tradition, butterflies represent the freedom of the soul, rebirth, and the longevity of love; in Western art history, they are emblems of transformation and impermanence. Here, transposed into the language of mosaic, they become a visual chorus accompanying the figure, as if they were benevolent presences, emanations of her own role as silent guardian.
