A step into the past...

Our story goes back to 1987, when Maurizio Leo Placuzzi founded SICIS in Ravenna, Italy. The company soon became the indisputed leader worldwide in the production of musive art, but the adventure didn’t stop there. Following our vision of harmonious interiors we created our own collection of furniture and an interior design division. The never-ending search for new experiences, along with our passion for mosaics, brought us to study the micromosaic technique and its historical applications in the art of goldsmithing. Since then we started creating capitvating jewels, where creativity merges with technique in a kaleidoscope of tiny fragments of minerals, gold and gemstones.

Now, under the creative direction of Gioia Placuzzi, we are making our way in the world. We’ve created a line of high jewellery, a line of pret-a-porter jewels and watches. We’ve opened 4 single-brand boutiques and a selected network of dealers in different countries. We’ve initiated significant collaborations and projects, and we’re actively promoting our jewelry and craftsmanship across the globe.

Gioia Placuzzi She represents the second generation of the family business, which she joined immediately after graduating from Bocconi University of Milan in Business and Management and specialized in Marketing and Strategy at Cass Business School in London. Following a personal passion of hers (she graduated at the Gemological Institute of America in London) she had the intuition to develop the refined micromosaic art in a contemporary jewellery line, recovering an ancient tradition dating back to the late XVIII Century. This is how Sicis Jewels was born. After several years of intense collaboration, in 2018 she became the creative director with the aim of growing the SICIS jewellery and watchmaking brand and business.

We have a dream. Our dream is to bring back the ancient micromosaic technique and infuse it with a contemporary touch by crafting it with a value that goes beyond the preciousness of the materials.

We aspire to craft items that stand out for their exceptional craftsmanship and sophistication of their unique designs.

We gathered in our atelier the best mosaic masters in Italy to perfect their technique and create something that goes beyond a simple jewellery piece. Every jewel is a small masterpiece, a miniature conceived with attention to every single detail. Each fragment is placed with millimeter accuracy, by expert hands and attentive eyes.

The value of time

They say the most precious gift of all is time. It takes tens of hours of work to create our jewels. We take our time: to research, to experiment, to design, to test, and to make.

This special book gathers hand-drawn designs of our most precious high collections, celebrating the harmony of vision, craftsmanship, and innovation. Alongside, collection notes reveal how our ideas evolve— from the intimacy of the sketchbook to the brilliance of the finished jewel.

Italian at Heart Our headquarters are in Ravenna, a city renowned as the birthplace of mosaics. It’s no surprise that mosaic is at the heart of everything we create.

But there’s something else we hold dear - being Italian.

Our Italianness is woven into every jewel, from the meticulous care we pour into each piece to the time we dedicate to perfecting it. Even the spirit of positivity, subtly embedded in every creation, is a reflection of who we are.

Quality is not just a choice; it’s ingrained in the design, ensuring each piece of jewellery is not only visually stunning but also comfortable to wear. It extends to the selection of gemstones, carefully chosen by our gemologists from around the world.

Quality is an everyday routine.

Micromosaic in history In 18th-century Papal Rome, a precious and singular art blossomed: that of tiny mosaic. Vast images once spanning entire walls metamorphosed into subtle embroidery, guiding the beholder on an ever-shifting journey.

Later on, a new technique unfurled: “malmischiati.” Diverse colors blended together, weaving infinite shadows in single tesserae. A palette, boundless with ten thousand shades, turned mosaics into living canvases. Micromosaics started adorning everyday objects, reaching their zenith as jewels of exquisite artistry.

Mosaics birthed from cut enamel, each piece sculpted with measured hammer’s grace. Then, in the 18th’s twilight, spun glass paste wove a finer tapestry, birthing micromosaics. Enamel, molten to slender sticks, is then cut into minuscule fragments by Micromosaic Masters.

Queens and noble women fell in love with the rare beauty of these unique jewels. Entire collections of jewellery in micromosaic could be found by the end of ‘700 in the whole Europe and in Russia. Nowadays we can admire these masterpieces at the Hermitage Museum and in the Vatican Museums.

High Jewellery Our original creations are mostly inspired by nature. The design is followed by an intense phase of research. Our gemologist search for the perfect gemstones, cut and colour. Our high jewellery line consists of unique works of art. Each piece is meticulously crafted with intricate micromosaic patterns and a variety of precious stones. With extensive attention to detail and care, these creations are designed to be worn on special occasions.

Tesserae At the heart of the Tesserae Collection lies a vibrant central gemstone, the true essence of each piece. Featuring Yellow Diamond, Peridot, Sapphire, Tanzanite, Morganite, Rubellite, and Aquamarine, these magical rings offer versatile beauty, perfect for any occasion. What sets them apart is their unique design: a removable micromosaic skirt that transforms the ring, allowing the center stone to be worn on its own. An extraordinary fusion of innovation and high jewellery, the Tesserae Collection is a masterpiece crafted by our very own visionary designers.

Fine Jewellery Our fine jewellery line extends the essence of our high jewellery masterpieces. These creations are simpler in design, yet still carries our iconic micromosaic technique and precious stones. We designed these pieces to be suitable for everyday wear while still making an elegant statement.

The idea of merging mosaic, something unperishable and eternal, with time, the most volatile of the dimensions, pushed us to create stunning timepieces. Objects to collect, to cherish, to wear in special occasions or carry on your wrist everyday.

We were featured in the latest season of Emily in Paris , with Lily Collins wearing our full Trinity Collection. The jewels seamlessly complemented the character’s style, weaving Italian micromosaic craftsmanship into a contemporary story of modern femininity. This feature celebrated the dialogue between artisanal heritage and fashion-led storytelling on a global stage.

We collaborated with FOPE to celebrate the tenth anniversary of their Venice flagship with the limited-edition Eka San Marco bracelet. This exclusive piece unites FOPE’s iconic Flex’it technology with a handcrafted micromosaic centerpiece created by Sicis master artisans. Inspired by the vibrant mosaics of the Basilica di San Marco, each bracelet becomes a miniature work of art honoring Italian craftmanship.

We collaborated with The Gem for an exclusive Suhoor event at the Poli Rooftop in Dubai. Our jewels were beautifully paired with The Gem’s stunning abayas, creating a harmonious fusion of craftsmanship and tradition. This special evening embodied the spirit of Ramadan, bringing together meaningful connections and a love for artistry.

This year, we had the pleasure of presenting our jewels on a global stage at The Palm Beach Show —one of the most luxurious and sophisticated showcases in the United States, held in Florida.

To showcase our micromosaic artistry, we collaborated with Bulgari to reimagine their iconic Serpenti bracelet. This unique piece, crafted with vibrant micromosaic scales, brings a new perspective to the classic design.

Sicis jewels made a debut at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. We had the opportunity to exclusively preview our jewellery at the stylist club, where celebrities and stars had the privilege of selecting their favorites before stepping onto the famous red carpet.

To explain the fine art of micromosaic, the Victoria & Albert Museum of London commissioned us to create a portrait. It is a reproduction of a tiny portion of a table originally made by Michelangelo Barbieri, “The Flora of Two Sicilies”.

It’s now exposed at the V&A.

For SICIS’s 30th birthday we organized an event in our city, Ravenna, to introduce everyone to the extraordinary art of mosaic and micromosaic. Through a multimedia and immersive path we have led visitors from the dawn of our history to the present, showing them techniques and materials.
